Port conditions in Hopen
Hopen has one of the best harbors in Lofoten from a natural point of view. Hopspollen is well protected from the weather and wind. The inlet was already deepened in 1891-92 at the expense of the state, and has subsequently been dredged several times.
In the summer of 2002, the inlet and the harbor were dredged again by the Norwegian Coastal Administration. Today, the inlet has a depth of 5.5 – 6 meters, and the company has a depth at the quay of 6 meters. We are classified as a state fishing port.
ISPS
Hopen Harbor is an approved ISPS Terminal
The International Ship and Port Facility Security Code – called the ISPS code, has been prepared by the UN Maritime Organization IMO. The purpose of the rules is to protect vessels in international traffic against terrorist acts. Passengers and crew are also covered by the rules.
Regulations on special security and anti-terror measures in Norwegian ports” implements those parts of the ISPS Code that impose requirements on port terminals that serve such vessels. The regulations were temporarily introduced on 1 July 2004. On 3 July 2007, the Ministry of Fisheries and Coastal Affairs issued new “Regulations on the security of ports and port terminals against terrorist acts, etc.
Areas covered by ISPS are in principle closed to the public. Everyone must show an approved access card to enter an ISPS terminal. The operators at the port terminal clear their visitors.
Hopen Port is, however, only covered by the regulations when vessels subject to ISPS regulations are berthed.
Otherwise, the area is open to the public.
